HoloLens 2 for Industry: Enterprise Deployment Guide
For a pilot, the question is whether the demo lands. For a fleet, the question is whether the device survives a shift, a rollout across sites, and a security review. This guide covers where Microsoft HoloLens 2 holds up on the shop floor, where it does not, how it compares with the RealWear Navigator 520 and the Meta Quest 3, and what a fleet rollout asks of an IT team.
HoloLens 2 discontinued: what to do with your fleet in service?
On January 1, 2027, the technician opening Dynamics 365 Remote Assist on a HoloLens 2 will find a shut-down application. Microsoft has set three dates for fleets in service. Production stopped in December 2024. Remote Assist and Dynamics 365 Guides stop working after December 31, 2026. Critical security patches stop on December 31, 2027, and all software support with them.
The Usine Digitale article that often comes up with this search talks about headsets being "switched off." It targets Windows Mixed Reality headsets from HP, Samsung, Acer, or Lenovo, made unusable by Windows 11 24H2. Your HoloLens 2 still works.
What changes for a field team
Applications. Your expert calls and guided procedures run through Remote Assist and Guides. Microsoft closed subscription renewals on November 1, 2025. After December 31, 2026, both applications stop. Your data stays stored in Dataverse, but Guides will no longer display it on the headset.
The fleet. Microsoft no longer manufactures units. A broken headset gets replaced from remaining stock, while it lasts. Windows Holographic 24H1, released in November 2024, remains the last functional update.
Security. From 2028, a HoloLens 2 connected to the plant network runs without patches. Your IT department will need to treat it as an exception or retire it.
Keep, migrate, or switch headsets
Keeping the fleet through the end of 2027 stays workable if your use cases run on locally installed applications rather than Remote Assist or Guides. Migrating applications makes sense when the procedures and 3D content hold value: you carry them into an application that no longer depends on a single headset. Switching headsets becomes necessary when replacement units run out.
To choose the next headset, start from the workstation rather than a ranking:
- See the real world. HoloLens 2 lets you see the shop floor through its visor. The headsets listed below render the environment through cameras. Test them at the workstation: reading a display, an indicator light, a colour code.
- Work hands-free. The operator handles the part while consulting the procedure.
- Hold up on the floor. Worn with PPE, for a full shift, in classified zones.
- Fit the information system. Fleet management, identities, access to maintenance and quality data.

Where HoloLens 2 holds up
Maintenance and remote assist
The pain. A machine stops. The technician on shift has not met this fault. The reference procedure sits in a binder or on a terminal two buildings away, and the expert who knows the machine is on another site.
What changes. Work instructions sit on the equipment, and the technician keeps both hands on the job. A remote expert sees the same view and leaves annotations that stay locked to the part. Dynamics 365 Remote Assist ties the call to a work order in Dynamics 365 Field Service, until its end of support on December 31, 2026.
The limit. Shop-floor Wi-Fi has gaps between cells. Critical work needs an offline procedure. Anchoring drifts on bare metal, glass, and surfaces without texture.
Quality inspection
The pain. An inspector checks a part against a paper drawing, misses a deviation, and the defect moves down the line or ships to the customer.
What changes. The reference model overlays the physical part. The check runs in a fixed order, hands free, and the device records each non-conformity with its position and sends it to the PLM or the quality system.
The limit. Fine metrology stays with dedicated gauges and coordinate measuring machines. The overlay guides the eye and documents the check. It does not measure to the micron.
Training and knowledge transfer
The pain. Operators learn rare or high-risk procedures on live equipment, or with a senior instructor booked for each session. Mistakes cluster on the steps that come around once or twice a year.
What changes. The operator runs the procedure in context, with checkpoints and a record of what passed. Hand tracking on HoloLens 2 supports direct interaction with the model, without controllers.
The limit. A custom scenario needs scoping, source data, and an owner on site who updates it when the procedure changes.
Where HoloLens 2 does not fit
- Explosive atmospheres. HoloLens 2 carries no ATEX certification. For Zone 0, 1, or 2, use an intrinsically safe device such as the RealWear Navigator Z1.
- All-shift continuous wear. The visor loads the brow. For a full shift over a hard hat, a monocular device such as the RealWear Navigator 520 carries better.
- VR simulation and low unit cost. Full immersion, or a low price per seat for occasional use, points to the Meta Quest 3.
- Studio-grade visuals. For photoreal materials and collaborative design review, Apple Vision Pro holds the display advantage.

What a fleet rollout asks of IT
Device lifecycle
With production closed, size the fleet against the 2027 support horizon and budget the next-generation migration. Confirm spare-unit and repair availability with your integrator before you commit.
Security and compliance
HoloLens 2 runs Windows Holographic for Business: device encryption, conditional access, and an on-premises option where data stays on site. Treat it as a managed Windows endpoint under your existing policy, not as an exception.
Fleet management
Enrol devices in Microsoft Intune, with Windows Autopilot for zero-touch provisioning. Push applications, updates, and kiosk profiles from the console. A device left in developer mode fails the audit.
Network
Map Wi-Fi coverage where the work happens, not only in the offices. Survey for dead zones and Faraday cages on the floor. Remote Assist, until its end of support on December 31, 2026, needs steady upload bandwidth and firewall paths open to the relevant Microsoft 365 endpoints.
Identity and licences
Accounts on Microsoft Entra ID, licences for Field Service, and a decision on how guest experts outside the tenant get access. Microsoft stopped renewing Remote Assist licences on November 1, 2025, and the application stops after December 31, 2026. Settle federation before the first multi-company call.
Operator adoption
The device fits over prescription and safety glasses, and the Industrial Adjustment Kit adapts it to a hard hat. Set a cleaning routine for shared units. Train operators on fit and eye calibration, and name a site owner for the content. Without that owner, the content goes stale within a year and the floor stops trusting it.
When to choose HoloLens 2
Choose it for binocular, hands-free work where holograms stay locked to real equipment, inside a Microsoft-managed estate: guided maintenance, quality inspection, and training on rare procedures. Look elsewhere for explosive atmospheres, all-shift wear, VR simulation, or studio visuals.
